The Story Behind The SongThe Story Behind The Song

I had made a good reputation as a facile lyric writer of songs that first came to notice as instrumentals, such as "In An 18th Century Drawing Room." This intriguing instrumental written by Frankie Carle first came to prominence in a Glen Gray Casa Loma orchestra recording. Lou Levy tipped me off to this forthcoming hit and despite the fact that he was not its publisher, he arranged for me to meet Frankie who was appearing with his own band somewhere in the Boston area.

Frankie, who'd been knocking around the music business for quite a few years, was overwhelmed by his sudden success. I suggested some modifications in his melody so that it would be sing-able and he agreed. Both as an instrumental and vocal we got a slew of recordings and kept the number one spot on the Hit Parade for many months.
