The Story Behind The SongThe Story Behind The Song

This tune was another one of Raymond Scott's (Harry Warnow) whimsical creations that he first recorded as an instrumental with his six-man quintet. Harry not only created these delightful instrumentals but gave them equally intriguing titles: "In An 18th Century Drawing Room," "Boy Scout In Switzerland," "Pretty Little Petticoat," "Huckleberry Duck." Each title immediately conveys a complete picture and story and I was flattered to be invited to add words to these charming melodies. For example, imagine naming a duck Huckleberry!

Your mind immediately thinks of Huckleberry Finn, that great Mark Twain character who roamed all over the place and kept getting into mischievousness. Starting with that thought it was easy for me to follow through with a lyric that told about a peripatetic duck who ate huckleberries and got into troublesome situations.

My lyric version of this song managed to garner quite a few humorous platters by artists like Barry Wood and Jerry Lewis. This song still shows up today in performances in all media.
